At OCG Companies, we believe in giving back to the community and fostering sustainable practices. This summer, we had the incredible opportunity to partner with Keep Growing Detroit, an organization dedicated to promoting food sovereignty and sustainable urban agriculture in the Eastern Market district. Our team eagerly rolled up their sleeves to help plant various vegetables in their thriving urban garden, contributing to a greener and healthier Detroit.
A Day in the Garden
On a sunny Thursday afternoon, our enthusiastic volunteers gathered at Keep Growing Detroit's urban garden. Nestled in the heart of the Eastern Market district, this vibrant green space is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. The garden is not only a source of fresh, local produce but also a hub for education and community engagement.
Planting for a Purpose
Our team was excited to get their hands dirty and make a tangible impact. We were tasked with planting a variety of vegetables. These crops will contribute to Keep Growing Detroit's mission of providing fresh, affordable produce to local residents, while also teaching urban gardening skills to community members.
The Importance of Urban Gardening
Urban gardening plays a crucial role in enhancing food security, promoting healthy eating, and fostering a sense of community. By transforming vacant lots and underutilized spaces into productive gardens, organizations like Keep Growing Detroit are making fresh produce accessible to more people and reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting food.
A Team Effort
Our volunteer day was a perfect blend of hard work, team bonding, and fun. Under the guidance of Keep Growing Detroit's knowledgeable staff, we learned about the best practices for planting and maintaining an urban garden. It was inspiring to see our team come together, united by a shared goal of supporting sustainable agriculture and contributing to the local community.
Get Involved
We encourage everyone to get involved with organizations like Keep Growing Detroit. Whether you have a green thumb or are just starting out, there are many ways to contribute to urban gardening projects. Volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word can help support these vital community efforts.
Thank you to Keep Growing Detroit for welcoming us and providing this wonderful opportunity. We look forward to many more partnerships and projects that help make Detroit a greener, healthier place for everyone.
